Penmachno

The picturesque village of Penmachno lies within the beautiful Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, just 4 miles outside the popular tourist hotspot of Betws-y-coed.

Sitting within a small valley surrounded by beautiful hills and forestry, the area is a haven for wildlife and commands some spectacular views.

The parish of Penmachno is deeply associated with the Welsh language, being the birthplace of Bishop William Morgan who translated the bible into Welsh, locally, and thus had an immense influence in the survival of the native tongue.  Wherever you go in the village you are surrounded by a deep sense of history, typified by the late 5th century memorial stones which sit within the village church, and also the much photographed Roman bridge (seen in the background on this page).

In more modern times, the village has become a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts with the Machno mountain bike trails being a particular pull.  Here at The Eagles Penmachno, we welcome mountain biking groups, and provide a secure lockup for your bicycles.

Local Activities

Mountain Biking

The Penmachno mountain bike trails is classed as one of the finest set-ups in Wales, and the tracks start within a few short pedal pushes of The Eagles’ front door.  The trails are split into two loops, which wind their way through 30 kilometres of the beautiful local forestry.  With some sections being classed as extremely technical, there is something for riders of all abilities.  As well as Penmachno, several other MTB trails considered as amongst the best in the UK are also very easily accessible from Penmachno, including The Marin Trail, Antur Stiniog, Coed-y-Brenin and Llandegla.

Outdoor Adventure

North Wales, and Eryri in particular, has long held a reputation as one of the most stunningly beautiful areas of the UK and has attracted lovers of the great outdoors for many decades.   The local hills, mountains, lakes, rivers and beaches provide endless opportunities for exploration and memories that will last forever.  More recently North Wales has also become a mecca for thrill seekers.  Local companies such as Zip World and Go Below have introduced a whole new world of adventure with their zip lines, underground adventures and much more.

We were walking Snowdon and stayed overnight. Staff were welcoming. Pub was really nice with decent, friendly people. The food looked good. The rooms were spotless and up to date with tea coffee making facilities and biccy’s. Bunk beds were very comfortable with lovely thick white duvets. There was even a very clean, fully equipped kitchen with large dining table and books/games. There is a Londis shop just outside if you need anything. Also great for walking Snowdon, only a scenic 20 min drive away. Well done guys. You have a lovely place and we really enjoyed staying. Would recommend it 100%.
